Garden Wall Costs: Brick, Block, Stone, and Gabion

Materials, height, foundations, and access all affect the price of a garden wall.

Words by Clara Ashdown · Sep 23, 2026 · 6 minutes

A garden wall adds privacy, structure, and permanence, but it is one of the more expensive boundary options.

Understanding cost drivers helps you compare quotes and choose the right material.

❦

Materials

  • ✿Rendered block — affordable and modern-looking
  • ✿Brick — traditional, durable, mid-range cost
  • ✿Natural stone — attractive and long-lasting, but often the most expensive
  • ✿Gabions — wire cages filled with stone; quick to install and good for slopes

❦

What affects the price

Height and length are obvious factors, but foundations matter as much. Taller walls need deeper footings and sometimes reinforcement. Difficult access, removing old walls or hedges, and sloping ground all add labour.

❦

Retaining walls cost more

A wall holding back soil must resist significant pressure and needs proper drainage behind it. Retaining walls over a modest height may need engineering design. See our retaining wall guide for details.

Permissions

Height limits often apply to boundary walls, especially next to roads. Check local planning rules, and talk to neighbours before building on or near a shared boundary.

This is general landscaping and garden information, not professional advice. Costs, regulations, and plant suitability vary by location. Call before you dig to locate buried utilities, and consult a licensed landscaper or engineer for retaining walls, drainage, and structural work.
