Choosing Garden Lighting: Safety, Mood, and Running Costs
Good garden lighting is layered, subtle, and pointed at the right things. Here is how to plan it.

Outdoor lighting lets you use the garden after dark, makes paths safer, and can make a house look striking from the street.
Too much light, or light in the wrong place, creates glare and annoys neighbours.

Start with safety
Light steps, changes in level, paths, and doors first. Low-level path lights and step lights are more comfortable than bright floodlights.

Add atmosphere
Uplighting a tree, washing light across a textured wall, or adding soft lighting around a seating area creates depth and mood. Aim for pools of light rather than lighting everything evenly.

Solar, low-voltage, or mains
✿Solar: no wiring and easy to install, but output is lower and depends on sunlight
✿Low-voltage: safer and easier to install yourself with a transformer, ideal for most garden lighting
✿Mains voltage: brighter and suited to security lighting, but must be installed by a qualified electrician

Choose warm, efficient LEDs
LED fittings use little electricity and last for years. Warm white light (around 2700–3000K) looks more natural in gardens than cool white.

Be a good neighbour
Point fittings downward or at specific features, use shields to reduce glare, and put lights on timers or sensors. This also reduces the impact on wildlife.
