The right mower makes lawn care quicker and easier. There is no single best type.
Start with your lawn size and the finish you want.
❦
Rotary mowers
A spinning blade cuts grass. Versatile and good for most lawns, including longer grass. Available as electric corded, battery, or petrol.
❦
Cylinder mowers
A scissor-like action gives a very fine finish and stripes. Best for flat, well-kept lawns mown often.
❦
Robotic mowers
Cut little and often automatically. Need boundary setup or GPS. Higher upfront cost. Can be a hazard to hedgehogs at night; set daytime schedules.

Corded, battery, or petrol?
Corded electric mowers are light and cheap but limited by cable length. Battery mowers are quiet, cable-free, and increasingly powerful, but larger lawns may need spare batteries. Petrol mowers are suited to big or rough lawns but are noisier, heavier, and need more maintenance. If you already own battery garden tools from one brand, a mower that shares the same batteries can save money.
