Block Paving Driveways: What You Need to Know

Block paving looks smart and is easy to repair. Drainage and the sub-base decide how well it lasts.

Block paving is one of the most popular driveway surfaces. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid, making repairs straightforward.

But a driveway is only as good as what is under it.

❦

The sub-base

Driveways carry heavy loads. A proper sub-base of compacted crushed stone, deep enough for cars, prevents sinking and ruts. Ask any contractor how deep their sub-base will be.

Drainage rules

Many areas require new front driveways to manage rainwater on site, for example by using permeable paving or directing water to a soakaway or lawn. Check local planning rules; permission may be needed for non-permeable surfaces.

Choosing blocks

  • ✿Concrete blocks — affordable, many colours
  • ✿Clay pavers — richer colour that lasts longer
  • ✿Permeable blocks — gaps let water drain through
  • ✿Pattern choices — herringbone is strongest for vehicles

Maintenance

Sweep regularly, top up jointing sand, and remove weeds early. Sealants can reduce staining and weed growth.
